Portugal
FROM THE ROAD
Stop-offs who treated us well, despite our too-many questions and terrible language skills.

The
FOOD
The most Portuguese foods we intentionally met with over and over again, from Francesinhas, mistura cheeses, pastel de natas, grilled sardines, olives, tinned fish, polvo a lagareiro, fish stews, black pork and grilled sausages (alheira de mirandela), franco assado (bbq chicken), bread soup, caldo verde, tomato rice, and the required bifanas and bacalhau.

The Running
Best Places to Visit List

As we go, here’re some non-luxury, real-food kitchens and pastelerias we’ve stopped in at along the way. The best places to visit in Portugal so far: everything Alentejo, Aveiro, and Viseu.
Our travel ideas criteria
Authentic
Every artist, designer, baker, or chef we’ve loved so far has been named Maria, Nuno, Claudia, Laura, or João so far, so you know their creations are authentically Portuguese.
NOT "EXPENSIVE"
For the most part, anything listed here will be something you’d put $, $$, or $$$ next to, but rarely (never?) $$$$. Why? Because we’re trying to see real Portugal (and we’re not on a $$$$ budget ourselves). There are tons of great lists for fine dining and special occasions out there though.
POSSIBLY DOG AND KID-FRIENDLY
Because almost everything is, but it’s good to hear it anyway.
